Co-host and Group D leaders Ukraine were riding high going into the game – the excitement from Shevchenko’s two goals against Sweden on Monday still hadn’t died down and many believed that they would able to qualify and move on to the quarter finals. All they needed was a win.
France needed the win as well – not to qualify, but to just hold on to their spot.
